I have been fat my whole life, even when I was a kid I was always bigger than everyone else. If you asked me 2 years ago, i’d have told you that I had tried everything to lose weight. So many different diets, food replacement shakes, going to the gym, over restricting myself, punishing myself by not letting myself eat, weight watchers, I bought a million diet books and I even bought a hypnotising CD that was meant to help you lose weight 😂 but none of it worked.
I now know this is because the one thing I didn’t really do is work hard. I thought it should be easy, I mean it’s easy to put the weight on right? eat too much, do too little and bam, weight starts to pile up. So just find a way to reverse that and you’re onto a winner. Unfortunately, losing the weight and keeping it lost is much harder and less fun than putting it on.
What I have discovered over the last 2 years is that you have to undo a lot of habits that you didn’t even know you had and build new, healthier ones. I’ll be honest, I don’t subscribe to the new trend of weightloss jabs because I don’t think they address the issue. If you’re overweight then you more than likely have issues regulating your relationship with food and in order to lose weight you have to fix this and find a way to coexist with the thing you struggle with most. From what I understand of these jabs they just remove your desire to eat, which in my opinion is just another way to mask the issue. I massively struggle with food noise and my eating habits but I have to face them head on and keep pushing against them because I know it’s the only way to deal with it properly. Would I love the noise to stop? absolutely. Do I think those jabs would fix this long term? absolutely not.
I’m going to list things people have said or suggested are the reasons i’ve been able to lose weight:
- I don’t have children so I have all the time in the world to go to the gym.
- I have a personal trainer and he does the work for me.
- I’m ‘young’ so I have more energy.
- I have more money to waste on going to classes / the gym / a PT.
The truth is I have the same amount of hours in the day as anyone else, I work full time and have a career and family, I just found a way to work the gym into my day. I wake up at 5:45am everyday to get to the gym around my shifts.
My PT does not do the work for me, he does not wake me up in the morning, feed me, take me out for walks, take me to the gym every day, take me out on runs, to gym classes or tuck me in at night. He trains me 2 hours a week and suffers an endless stream of whining via messages BUT if I chose to do nothing outside of his sessions then I would not see results.
I don’t feel my age has any baring on what I do.
I choose to spend the money I EARN on the things that I think will improve my life. I am investing in my health and wellness, would it be better if I spent it on drinking or eating because that’s ‘normal’?
If you seriously want to lose weight, the only way I have found it to work is to:
- Replace your unhealthy habits with new healthier ones
- Show up when you don’t want to and do the work even when it’s hard
- Admit the issues that you have and address them honestly
- Be consistent
- Stop blaming other people or finding excuses, i’m sorry to say it but you’re probably the problem!
So, I guess what i’m saying is the reason it worked for me this time is because I realised there is no quick fix, there is no way to ‘quickly’ drop the weight. I’ve had people suggest you should quickly drop the weight by over-restricting yourself then ‘become healthier’ afterwards. In my opinion, that’s not sustainable and wont work because, respectfully, if you knew how to be healthy then you wouldn’t be trying to find ways to change. It’s so much harder than I thought and there’s no end to the process. Your brain needs to be worked just as much as your body does. Build those habits that will sustain you and your older self will thank you for.
There’s no set way to do it, find things you love and build on those. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time if that doesn’t suit your life, you just have to replace what’s hurting you with things that will heal you.
Lots of love, Carol ♥️
